LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team fell 4-1 in the first round of the CCAA Tournament on Wednesday as UC San Diego won the game to move on to the semifinal round.
Due to thunderstorms Tuesday night at Triton Field, the first-round game was rescheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. With the 4-1 result, the Tritons advanced to play the Sonoma State Seawolves on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Kellogg Field.
For both men's and women's soccer, the semifinal and final rounds of the CCAA Tournament will be held at Kellogg Field in Pomona.
With a fantastic season under their belts, the fifth-seeded Broncos finish with an overall tally of 9-7-2. The match was their first playoff game of the season. The fourth-seeded UCSD squad now holds an overall 13-5-1 mark.
The first half went the home team's way as they finished the game's first 45 minutes with a score of 2-0. Scoring first, in the opening period's 13th minute, was Katie O'Laughlin. She was assisted by Mary Reilly, who dribbled down the right side of the field and crossed to O'Laughlin in the middle of the field. O'Laughlin then shot into the upper right of the Broncos' goal.
Less than 13 minutes later, with the clock reading 25:31, the home team's leading scorer, Reilly, would strike and put her team up 2-0. Her shot in the lower left corner of CPP's net came after a pass from teammate Elisa Martinez.
When the halftime break came, the Tritons led it 2-0. The Green and Gold outshot the home team by a tally of 10-7.
In the second half, the fourth-seeded Tritons kept their momentum and just a couple minutes into the half scored their third goal of the game. Scoring the goal for the UCSD squad was Jordyn McNutt with her third of the season. She received an assist from Elisa Martinez. Two minutes later, the Tritons' fourth goal would be scored. O'Laughlin put in the shot, her second of the game.
With just over 32 minutes on the clock, the Green and Gold would remove their zero from the scoreboard. After a free kick for
Rachel Killigrew, which she used to pass to
Reanne Macon just inside the penalty box, Macon sent a long shot to the right of the diving keeper and put the Broncos' goal on the board.
