SAN FRANCISCO – With several closely-contested sets, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team topped San Francisco State 3-1 on Friday for an exciting road win.
Freshman
Kristen Hamlin put together a breakout performance, collecting a season-high 20 kills while committing just five errors. She also added four digs and four blocks.
Nicoletta Stork and
Alina Smith did a stellar job of setting up Hamlin and the other CPP hitters, as Stork totaled 29 assists and Smith delivered 27.
Defensively, senior
Zoe Herrera led the way with 33 digs. The Broncos started off strong, tallying a hitting percentage of .255 in the opening set. CPP took that by a result of 25-23 and followed with another close win in the second set, 25-22. The Gators managed to bounce back with a 25-23 win in the third set to pull within 2-1. The Broncos finished off the match with a 26-24 result in the fourth frame.
Along with Hamlin notching four blocks,
Christen Williams led the team with five on Friday night. One of Hamlin's key blocks came on the final point of the first set, snapping a 3-0 run for SFSU. The Gators jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second frame but the Broncos finished just as strong, taking the last four points with the help of some attack errors from the Gators.
After the teams were tied 24-24 in the fourth set, Williams delivered a key kill and
Samantha Figueroa provided the match's final point with a service ace.
The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. road match at Cal State East Bay.
