HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team secured a four-set victory over the Cal State East Bay Pioneers on Saturday evening. The win gives the Broncos a spot in the first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament, marking the first playoff appearance for the team since 2008. With a strong offensive performance, the Broncos won the second through fourth set, falling only in set one.
Kristen Hamlin, a freshman middle blocker from La Habra Heights, continues her hot streak as she posted yet another double-digit kill match. She secured 19 against the Pioneers which earns her 39 on the week. As if having 19 kills wasn't impressive enough, she did so accurately with a .424 attack percentage.
Hannah Harrer and
Nicoletta Stork both recorded double-digit kills in the match as both had 10. Stork provided her Bronco teammates with a double-double as her 10 kills was coupled with a team-leading 28 assists. With nearly as many assists as Stork was
Alina Smith who earned 26.
Defensively there were three Broncos with double-digit digs.
Zoe Herrera registered a team-leading 25 digs, furthering her hold on first place in the CPP record books for the career mark in that category.
Alexandria Bollier was second on squad with 16 digs and rounding out the double-digit group was
Samantha Figueroa with 13.
The first set proved to be the Pioneers' only win on the night. They started off the set with a 4-1 run and despite a push from the Green and Gold, were able to extend the lead to 13-9. A solid matchup occurred after that and CPP was able to tie things up at 18-18. The final points of the set went the Pioneers' way however and they secured it 25-23.
With the second set underway, the Broncos started off on a 3-0 run. The Pioneers came back and tied things at eight apiece. After that tied scored, the CPP squad seemed to score a couple ties per every Pioneer point. The final score in the second set was 25-19 as CPP closed off with two kills by Hamlin and a CUSEB attack error.
The third set was by far the Broncos' most dominating. Early on, the set was even including a 5-5 tie. CPP immediately went on a six-point run. With a handful of hometown points thrown in, the Broncos ended the set on a 20-8 run and a final score of 25-13.
While not quite as massive a lead, the Broncos won the fourth and final set 25-16. As with most of the sets, the fourth set started out evenly matched. In the early points, the two squads shared the same score six separate times.
With a kill by Stork to make the score 8-7, the Green and Gold took the lead which would carry them throughout the remainder of the match. In the blink of an eye, CPP led the set 17-11, another blink and it was 22-15. The final two points for the Broncos were on a kill by
Desi Martin and a Pioneer attack error.
CPP will return home to Kellogg Arena for its second to last matchup of the 2015 regular season. Wednesday's matchup against the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. will be a special occasion for CPP volleyball as the Broncos will celebrate the five seniors who are playing their final season in Green and Gold.
Wednesday's match will begin at 7 p.m. and on top of being senior day, is also Veteran's Day. CPP Athletics will be taking the day and celebrating the people who make the freedom and safety of their fellow citizens a reality.
