Five Seniors Recognized in Five-Set Defeat

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos volleyball team dropped their final regular season home game of the 2015 season to the Cal State LA Golden Eagles on Wednesday. The match proved to be a great matchup as the two squads battled through five sets before the visitors emerged the victor.

CPP now holds an overall 15-12 mark on the season, complete with an 11-8 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.  With the win in the matchup, the Golden Eagles move up to fourth place in the CCAA standings, dropping the Green and Gold to fifth. They now hold an overall 19-8 mark with an 11-7 tally in conference.

The matchup was the final regular season home game for five of the Broncos' seniors. Kirsten Rutledge, Zoe Herrera, Christen Williams, Alexa Hasen, and Nicoletta Stork all are playing their final season in Green and Gold.

As she has the last couple matches, the CPP leader in kills on the evening was Kristen Hamlin. The freshman secured 21 kills, second only to Iona Lofrano of Cal State L.A. in the match.

The first set the Broncos won handily as they breezed past the visitors 25-12. This also included a seven-point run that carried the Broncos from 14 points to 21.

Set number two saw a much more ready Cal State LA squad. The set ended up at 25-23 in their favor as they tied up the match at one win apiece. Despite the Broncos jumping to an early 8-2 lead, the LA squad pushed back and evened things up at 13-13. A couple more points gave them a 15-13 lead and from that point on, they led the set.

With the long intermission over, the two squads were right back at it. The third set went in favor of the Golden Eagles at 28-26. There were a few multi-point runs for each team, but the game went to the CSULA squad with their set-ending three-point run.

Set number four evened things up in Kellogg Arena as the Broncos emerged on top 25- 17. They opened up on a 7-2 run then improved their lead to a score of 18-8. Points went back-and-forth from there and CPP won 25-17.
