SEASIDE, Calif. – In a back-and-forth and exciting finish, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a 65-63 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday. The Broncos have now won four of their last five games.
Three members of the Green and Gold squad recorded double-digit points in the contest.
Jordyn Shane, the Broncos' leading point scorer for the 2015-16 season, led the team.
With the win, the Broncos improve to a 4-5 tally thus far on the season, complete with a 2-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Otters numbers are the exact reverse of the Green and Gold as they have secured a 5-4 season tally and a 1-2 mark in conference play.
A native of Upland, Shane racked up 19 points on a 7-for-14 shooting from the field. On top of her baskets from the field, the freshman sank 5-of-7 free throws taken. Joining her in double-digit points was
Mary Williams who led the squad with a 55.9% shooting. The senior earned 16 points in the contest, going 5-for-9 with 6-of-8 free throws finding their mark. The final member of the CPP squad who registered in the double-digit point group was
Marshanique Hall. Another newcomer to the Broncos this season, Hall sank five shots, including a pair of threes and a free throw to earn her 13 points.
Marking her third-consecutive double-double, Williams also led the squad with 10 rebounds. She pulled down seven defensive boards while grabbing three of the offensive type. Second on squad with seven rebounds of her own was
Priscilla Brooks. The sophomore also provided her teammates with six points.
From the field, and as a team, the Broncos were the more efficient shooting squad, tallying a 45.5% going 25-for-55.
In terms of shots from beyond the arc, the Otters ran away with it, sinking 11 shots while the Broncos shot merely six times and made two of those shots. Both teams tallied 31 total rebounds in the contest, but the Broncos prevailed as they led the Otters just over 24 minutes of the game, while the Otters only held the lead for 11 and a half minutes.
The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday as they stay in Northern California and challenge the Cal State East Bay Pioneers at 5:30 p.m. The Pioneers are currently in first place in the conference standings as they are 2-0 in CCAA play and have a 7-2 overall tally. On Saturday the Pioneers played Menlo and routed them 84-39. The contest on Dec. 15 will be held in the Pioneer Gymnasium.
