HAYWARD, Calif. – Despite a late swell of points, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team fell to the Cal State East Bay Pioneers 61-55 on Tuesday.
The win for the Pioneers marked their sixth-consecutive victory as they lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with an overall 8-2 mark, complete with a 3-0 mark in conference play. Donning Green and Gold, the Broncos squad now stands at an even 2-2 mark in CCAA play en route to an overall 4-6 showing thus far in the 2015-16 season.
Freshman
Jackie Ricketson led the way offensively for the CPP team as she recorded 12 points on a 5-for-6 performance with a pair of free throws thrown in. Her 83.3% shooting also led both teams among players with more than two shots.
Three members of the Broncos' team posted eight points in the matchup as
Jordyn Shane,
Mary Williams, and
Alyssa Benton each finished with that tally.
Marshanique Hall racked up seven points in the contest, and rounding out the CPP scorers were
Erin Hagan and
Priscilla Brooks who racked up six apiece.
Total in the first two quarters, the Broncos racked up 27 points. They even tallied the first six points in game as Ricketson led off with a layup and then a pair of Williams layups soon followed. After those visitor points however, the hometown Pioneers turned on their offense and went on a 25-6 run that left the Broncos trailing by 13.
Hagan broke up a 17 point run in CSUEB's favor with a pair of free throws that each found their mark, and then the scoring remained relatively even. Heading into the halftime break, the Green and Gold rallied for nine-straight points, which left them just eight back of the Pioneers at the start of the second half.
The third quarter proved to be relatively quiet as the Pioneers posted 14 points to the Broncos' 11. In the final quarter of the contest, CPP went on its largest run of the game, but it wasn't enough to put them in front of the Pioneers. With 11-straight, the Green and Gold cut the home team's lead to just one basket. Four-consecutive free throws for the Pioneers finished off the game with the final score at 61-55.
CPP will return to action on Saturday as they host Central Washington at Kellogg Arena at 1 p.m. The matchup will be the Broncos' final game of the 2015 calendar year as they next play on Jan. 1.
