POMONA, Calif. – In the final game of the 2015 calendar year for Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball, the Broncos drew a 63-58 loss to the Wildcats of Central Washington on Saturday afternoon. A late swell of points pulled the Green and Gold close, but was not enough to close the gap.
Doing a stellar job for CPP with 23 total points on an 8-for-13 performance,
Marshanique Hall led both sides offensively. The junior added three successful shots from beyond the arc and four free throws to reach her 23 points.
Jordyn Shane was the only other Bronco to tally double-digit points in the contest as she contributed 12, sinking four shots from the field including one three and 3-of-3 free throws.
As a team in the game, the Broncos shot 41.2%, sinking 21-of-51 shots. The two squads were pretty evenly matched as the Wildcats tallied a 40.4% but made just a couple shots more than the Green and Gold. In the first half, CPP limited the opposition to just over a 30% shooting from the field. In the game, the Broncos' defense protected the long shots well, allowing just a single three pointer to find its mark.
The loss drops the Broncos to a 4-7 overall tally this season and improves the Wildcats to an 8-2 mark. Saturday's matchup will count as a regional matchup but not a conference game for either squad. The contest is the final non-conference game that is on the Broncos' schedule for the regular season.
To start the game, the Green and Gold jumped to an early lead that resulted in the visitors to Kellogg Arena playing some serious catchup. Halfway into the first quarter, the Broncos held a 14-2 lead over the CWU squad. Four minutes later, at the end of the quarter the Wildcats had pulled back a bit and trailed the Green and Gold by six with the score at 16-10.
The second half showed the two teams battling it out some more and a buzzer-beater three from Hall led the Broncos into the long break with a 25-24 lead.
Quarter No. 3 showed the Wildcats with some momentum as they outscored CPP 20-9 and entered the fourth and final quarter with a 10 point lead in the game. In the fourth quarter the hometown Broncos pushed back and came within just a single basket of the CWU team, but were unable to make that final basket.
The Wildcats added a couple late free throws and ended up with the five-point victory in the contest.
CPP will return to action on New Years Day as they head to Coussoulis Arena to challenge the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes at 5:30 p.m. The Coyotes, as of 4 p.m. on Dec. 19, have an overall 4-3 mark on the season, complete with a 1-2 showing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
