POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a win in the first conference game of the 2015-16 season as they topped the Cal State LA Golden Eagles 82-45. Wednesday's contest was the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener and thus advances the Broncos to a 1-0 record in the CCAA.
In the contest, there were two members of the Green and Gold that reached at least 20 points. Leading the way for the Broncos after a 23-point performance was
Jordyn Shane. The freshman had a 10-for-19 showing, including three shots from beyond the arc.
Also reaching the 20 point mark was
Mary Williams. The senior, along with her 22 points from the field on a stellar 9-for-11 showing, led the CPP defense with 10 rebounds. Wednesday's game marked her first double-double of the season.
As a team, the Broncos were successful on 51.6% of their shots taken from the field, including 54.5% from beyond the three point line. CPP also outrebounded their SoCal rivals 49-32. Just behind Williams' 10 was the eight pulled down by
Priscilla Brooks.
The CCAA opener began with both teams playing even ball. Opening off the scoring was Shane as she put in a long ball and put up CPP 3-0. The Golden Eagles tied it up, as they would do again at 5-5. But a pair of free throws from
Mary Williams gave the Broncos a lead which they would carry through the remainder of the game.
As the score read 14-12 in CPP's favor, the Green and Gold would put together their largest run of the game, adding 15 points to the board before allowing any CSULA point. The Broncos were able to put together a couple long runs as they also added 10-straight in the third period and nine-consecutive in the fourth.
The CPP defense minimized any potential damage to be done by the Golden Eagles' offense. While outrebounding them, they also kept them to a maximum of just five points at a time, and tallied a phenomenal 11 steals and five blocks.
The Broncos' bench did a solid job contributing to the game as they added 17 points. CPP's work under the rim was on point as well as they successfully earned 24 second chance points and 42 points from inside the paint.
CPP will continue its season and home stand Saturday as they host the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at 5:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena. The Broncos (3-4, 1-0 CCAA) will be playing the Toros (3-6, 1-0 CCAA) for the first time this season.
