Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

@CPPWBB Comeback Attempt Falls Short Saturday

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team battled back with a huge third quarter but ended up falling 73-66 on Saturday to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Broncos trailed 31-19 midway through the contest but rallied to outscore the Toros 27-14 in the third quarter. Dominguez Hills finished strong though, capturing the seven-point win.

As a result, CPP falls to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Toros improve to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in league action.

Three Broncos finished in double figures, including Jordyn Shane's team-high 16 points. Also with double-digit points were Mary Williams with 14 points and Marshanique Hall's 13 points. Williams finished with a double-double, adding 11 rebounds.

Dominguez Hills jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the start of the game but CPP managed to weather the storm, trimming the margin back to single digits at the 9:41 mark in the third quarter when Shane knocked down a jump off an Alyssa Benton assist.

Making an impressive run later in the third frame, an Erin Hagan layup tied up the game before a Hall basket gave CPP the lead. The two teams traded the advantage in the fourth quarter but a three-pointer from the Toros' Ali Bettencourt at the 1:58 mark proved to be a crucial basket as Dominguez went on to take the 73-66 result.

The Broncos showed plenty of quickness on defense, totaling 13 steals. Jackie Ricketson and Benton collected four apiece.

CPP will travel to play Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
