CPP Tops Sonoma, Earns CCAA Tournament Spot

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Ariel Marsh scored 30 points Friday, leading Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball to an 84-59 rout of Sonoma State.

With the win, the Broncos secured a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament to be held March 5 through March 7 in Stockton. CPP women's basketball has made it an annual tradition, earning its fifth-straight appearance under the leadership of head coach Danelle Bishop.

The March games in Stockton will mark the 21st year of the event. The Broncos have qualified in each of those 21 seasons.

Still up for grabs are the top two spots in the CCAA, positions that earn a first-round bye in the tournament. CPP holds third place in the conference standings at 14-3, while Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills lead the way with identical 15-2 marks.

Joining Marsh in double figures Friday were Ashley Lovett with 17 points, Jada Blackwell with 12 and Tyler Woods with 10. The two teams were even on the boards, 31-31, with Blackwell and Lovett collecting eight rebounds apiece.

CPP exhibited a tenacious defense on Friday, forcing 21 turnovers from the Seawolves. Blackwell tallied three steals and two blocks, while Woods added two steals. The Broncos shot 55 percent from the field, the fourth-highest mark so far this season.

CPP jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the start of the contest and opened up a 10-point lead less than seven minutes into the game after a pair of Mian Dingle free throws.

Later in the opening half, four-straight points by Lovett widened the gap to 18 points. Sonoma closed out the half strong though, trimming the edge back to 40-31 heading into the break.

The Seawolves pulled to within four early in the second half but CPP dominated the rest of the way, holding the host squad scoreless through the final five minutes to wrap up the 84-59 victory.

The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. road game at SF State.
