Broncos Secure 74-67 Comeback Win Saturday

SAN FRANCISCO - In Cal Poly Pomona's final game of its road trip on Saturday, San Francisco State held its own and battled down to the last minute, however the Broncos prevailed 74-67.

With the win, the Broncos improve to a 17-5 season tally, complete with a 15-3 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). No such luck for the Gators though, as they fall to a 0-18 record in conference play and have 22 losses in the 2014-15 season.

Going 8-for-19 from the floor, with a pair of threes and a perfect 10-of-10 from the line, Jada Blackwell led the Broncos with 28 points in the game. She was the lone CPP player with a double-double, as she also grabbed 12 boards. Leading the Green and Gold in three categories, the Rancho Cucamonga native also added seven assists.

Also with strong offensive performances were Ariel Marsh and Ashley Lovett, posting 13 and 12 points, respectively. Marsh also added six assists in the contest and a steal. With a pair of steals, Lauren Goecke posted the Bronco high in the category.

The Broncos had five successful shots from beyond the arc, Blackwell had two, Marsh had one, and Mian Dingle came in and sank both of her three-point shooting attempts.

Making a valiant push to secure their first win at home, the Gators posted the first point in the game with a jumper, and after Marsh pulled the visitors up with a three, the home team went on a 13-2 tear which left the Broncos 10 points back and mildly shocked.

The SFSU scoring trend continued through much of the half as the purple squad beat up on the Broncos and entered halftime with a 40-29 lead.

Taking the break between periods to talk out a strategy and collect themselves was what the Broncos needed. Coming out of the locker room, Tyler Woods continued the shooting spurt she started just before the half and put up three more points for CPP. Goecke and Lovett added baskets themselves and the Broncos' nine-point run pulled them just four back of the Gators.

CPP had two such nine-point streaks in the contest, which proved to be the Bronco high.

With 12:25 to go in the game, CPP pulled even with the Gators and a subsequent free throw by Lovett gave CPP a bit of room to breathe as they pulled ahead for the first time since Marsh's opening three.

The game went back and forth for the next few minutes until Goecke registered a layup that put CPP up for the remainder of the game. The final push for the Broncos, which also marked the final points in the game came for Ariel Marsh as she sank back-to-back free throws to secure the final 74-67 score.

The Broncos will return to action next Friday as they begin the final home-stand of the season with a contest against the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. That night will mark Faculty and Staff Appreciation night for Bronco Athletics as the department honors and thanks the members of Cal Poly Pomona who go above and beyond in their support for CPP Athletics.
