Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CPP Falls to Toros Saturday on Senior Night

POMONA, Calif. - In a battle of second-place teams on Saturday during Homecoming and Senior Night, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered a 74-66 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The loss drops the Broncos into third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a mark of 16-4 in league play. Just above CPP in the standings are Humboldt State at 18-2 and the Toros at 17-3.

With a spot in the CCAA Championships Tournament already clinched, the Broncos will play their final two regular season games next weekend on the road as they'll take on Cal State San Bernardino and the Jacks of HSU.

Prior to Saturday's game, CPP honored its six seniors: Jordan Henry, Ariel Marsh, Mian Dingle, Lauren Goecke, Ashley Lovett and Jada Blackwell. Three Broncos finished in double figures, including Ariel Marsh scoring 19 points and going 9-for-9 at the free throw line.

The tremendous Homecoming crowd of 2,303 produced the largest attendance for a Broncos' women's basketball game in 25 years. In a 1990 game against Delta State, 2,434 fans packed Kellogg Gym.

Mary Williams totaled 15 points while going 5-for-6 from the floor and Blackwell contributed 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Despite the Toros outrebounding CPP 41-35, Tyler Woods collected a career-high 10 boards. Ashley Lovett added eight rebounds of her own.

The Toros dropped in a layup in the game's opening minute and the visitors ended up never trailing through the rest of the game. After the Toros took a 7-0 lead, CPP responded with baskets from Lovett and Williams to cut the margin down quickly.

CSUDH closed out the opening half on an 8-3 run and took a 35-21 lead into the break. The gap widened to as large as 23 points in the second half but the Broncos didn't back down, making a late charge to pull the difference back to single digits. The huge crowd at Kellogg Gym certainly helped give CPP some late momentum.

In the end though, the Toros pulled out the 74-66 result.
