Blackwell Nets Point 1,000, CPP Wins 72-57

CHICO, Calif. - In just her second season at Cal Poly Pomona, conference scoring leader Jada Blackwell has reached the 1,000-point mark. Prior to Saturday's 72-57 victory over Chico State, the Rancho Cucamonga native needed just eight points to reach the milestone.

With the clock reading 10:42 in the first period, the senior put in a layup to give CPP a two-point lead and earn point No. 1,000. She ended the contest going 8-for-14 from the field en route to 18 points.

The Broncos had four players break into double-digits. Ariel Marsh put up 16 points, Tyler Woods provided 12 on top of her eight boards, and Lauren Goecke added 10.

Throughout the contest, the CPP posted a 50.9-percent shooting from the field and held Chico to a 34 percent. The Broncos nearly doubled the number of rebounds that Chico had, grabbing 37 to the home team's 20.

With the win under their belts, the Broncos improve to a 13-3 CCAA mark while going 15-4 overall. Chico State is 8-12 overall with a 5-11 conference record.

Coming off a big 63-46 win Friday night over Cal State Stanislaus, CPP carried its fire over to Saturday's matchup. With Marsh spurring the Broncos forward and opening up a couple runs with three-point shots, CPP quickly found itself with a double-digit lead over Chico.

In the first half, the Broncos' defense didn't allow the Wildcats to put together any big runs, keeping them at most to a six-point spurt. Entering halftime, the Green and Gold squad held a 17-point advantage capped off by a 9-0 run.

Coming out of the break, the Wildcats snapped the CPP streak and sank a pair of baskets themselves. Multiple times in the second half, Chico surged and put together small runs that consistently dropped the Bronco lead under 10.

But no matter how hard Chico pushed back, CPP had an answer. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way but the general landscape of the game remained the same as CPP earned the 72-57 win.

With six regular season games remaining as teams jostle for standing positions with playoffs approaching in early March, every win counts.

The Broncos will return to action on Friday as they head to Sonoma State to challenge the Seawolves at the Wolves' Den.
