Bronco Golf Classic Highlights CPP Support

POMONA, Calif - The 36th Annual Bronco Golf Classic was held on Monday, April 27, at the Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier with picture perfect weather and excellent course conditions.

"The Bronco Golf Classic continues to be an excellent opportunity to engage with our many friends and supporters of our university and program," Director of Athletics Brian Swanson said. "The ability to highlight Bronco Athletics and our outstanding student-athletes in a fun and relaxed setting is truly a day that is enjoyed by everyone who attends each year."

The day began with a continental breakfast and a Putting Contest, which was won by Brett Mieding. The 125 registered golfers teed off at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start and a special Tee Off prize won by Matthew Bennett.

The scramble-format tournament concluded with dinner, a live auction and awards. Items auctioned off included a one-week stay at a Kauai resort; golf at a number of local and private clubs; an autographed Mike Trout baseball; Dodger baseball tickets and a unique opportunity to attend an Angels game and watch batting practice from the field. Funds raised during the day all benefit the student-athletes and Bronco Athletics. Student-athletes were present and assisted at registration, on the course and at the dinner and awards' ceremony.

Special contest winners included: Men's Closest to the Pin – Murray Dubourdieu; Men's Longest Drive – Eric Cain; and Women's Longest Drive – Mary Vicario.

Winning teams were recognized through Callaway and Low Gross scoring. Each of the winning teams received a trophy featuring authentic horseshoes from the Arabian Horse Center on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.

Recognized for their 2nd place finish in the Callaway scoring with a 53 was the team of Mike Gibbs, John Reader, Bill Peters and Kurt Peters. Taking 1st place in the Callaway scoring with a 51 was the team of Jenzen Torres, Bob Walter, Randy Betten and Jimmy Ramos.

The Low Gross team scoring had two teams tied at 57, forcing a score-card playoff. Taking 2nd place was the team of Brad Williams, Matthew Bennett, Steve Mercado and Mary Vicario. First-place was awarded to the team of John Forbing, Ray Andersen, George Fisher and Brian Pearson.

"The day was a great success," concluded Director of Development and banquet emcee Paul Bubb. "The course could not have been in better playing conditions, the weather was spectacular, and the event raised both financial support and awareness for our Bronco Athletic program. Everyone won today."

Sponsors for the event included the Bel-Air Swap-Meet, Sanders Candy Factory, State Farm Insurance, the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, and Pepsi.
