DENVER, Colo. - Bronco seniors provided the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team with the drive they needed to secure a 2-1 victory over the Regis University Rangers on Sunday.
Stacey Atwater and
Megan Kisslan each scored for the Green and Gold.
It was both seniors' first goal of the season, and the two shots propelled the CPP squad to victory as the home team was unable to pull even. With the win they improve to a 3-1-0 record thus far in 2015.
"I couldn't be more proud of the team after today's win!" said head coach
Vanessa Valentine. "It isn't easy to get results on the road, but each player stepped up and did her job. It is also special when two seniors step up and score both goals to secure the win."
The hometown Rangers were first on the board in the game as a goal in the 12th minute put them up on the board. Sid Otto, a senior midfielder, scored the goal.
Just over eight minutes after RU put a one on the board, Atwater would receive a perfect pass from
Melissa Martinez that allowed the Bronco forward an opportunity to get one into the back of the net and put the Green and Gold on the board and tie the game at 1-1.
At half the two teams were even on the board with a tied score and headed into the second half with, for all intents and purposes, a new match.
Right around 21 minutes into the second half, Kisslan would push her team into the lead as a corner kick from
Natalie Di Angelo enabled the four-year Bronco the chance to head in her first goal of the year and third as a Bronco. Kisslan's last goal was scored during her sophomore campaign.
The tenacious CPP defense kept the Regis offense from evening things up.
CPP outshot the home team 16-13 in the game and
Ricki Ives provided the Green and Gold with three saves in the contest.
The Broncos will take to the road for their first California Collegiate Athletic Association matchup of 2015. A two-game road trip will see CPP play the UC San Diego Tritons and the San Marcos Cougars. San Marcos is entering their first year of play in the CCAA.
Friday, Sept. 25 will mark the first CCAA home game that the Broncos play at Kellogg Field. The Green and Gold will host Cal State Dominguez Hills and the day will be the annual Pack the Stands day, filled with promotional activities, games, and giveaways.
