@cppvb Challenges Cal State LA in CCAA Matchup

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will play their first road match in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) after opening conference play with a three-match homestand. The Green and Gold went 2-1 to start the CCAA season, besting Cal State Dominguez Hills and Humboldt State and falling to No. 21 Sonoma State on Saturday.

Overall on the season so far, the CPP squad has posted a 6-5 record. After Nicoletta Stork's performance in the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic, she earned the CCAA Player of the Week honor in the week of Sept. 7 through Sept. 13.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Broncos will head to the Eagles Nest on the campus of Cal State L.A. to challenge the Golden Eagles. Last season the series was split as both the Green and Gold and CSULA squads earned one win.

The first meeting was Sept. 20 as the Broncos earned a 3-2 victory with a "throwback" match in Darlene May Gymnasium. In the second match, the Golden Eagles topped the Broncos 3-1. The all-time matchup between the two squads leans slightly in L.A.'s favor as they have won 42 matches to the Broncos' 35.

After the short one-match road series, the Green and Gold will return to Kellogg Arena for an afternoon matchup on Saturday against the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay. Matchtime is set for 1 p.m. as the two squads have their first showdown of the 2015 season.

As was the case with the Golden Eagles, the Otters and Broncos split the series last season. CPP drew the first win at Kellogg Arena as 2015 senior Alexa Hasen landed herself in the CPP record books as she posted a .682 attack percentage, recording 16 kills on 22 attacks.  The Broncos won that match three sets to one.

The second meeting went to the Otters as they topped the Broncos three sets to none. That second matchup was held at the Kelp Bed, CSUMB's home for indoor sports located in the Otter Sports Center.

Looking at the numbers, the Broncos are led by Deanna Blaine in the kills category. The sophomore has tallied 123 kills thus far on the season. Leading the Green and Gold in terms of attack percentage is Stork, who has posted a .294 percentage so far through the 11 games. The senior is also second on the squad with 105 total kills and second with 177 assists.

Sophomore Alina Smith is first on the Broncos with 256 total assists as she averages 6.4 assists per set. On the defensive side of things, the Green and Gold are led by Zoe Herrera in the digs category. Herrera has recorded 206 thus far and that puts her third on the all-time list in the career digs category for CPP.

Hasen is at sixth place on the Broncos' all-time record book with 302 block assists in her career, just two behind fifth-place Clara Piersma, a 1984-85 member of the Green and Gold.
