LOS ANGELES – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team topped the No. 25 Cal State LA Golden Eagles 3-1 on Wednesday. The loss was the CSULA's first loss in conference play.
The Broncos improve to a record of 7-5 and hold a 3-1 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). LA now stands with a 10-2 record on the season, with a 3-1 mark in conference play.
CPP won the first set 25-18. The hometown Golden Eagles got off to an early lead, as they went on a 6-2 run. The Broncos pushed back though and soon the score stood tied at 10-10. From there the Green and Gold pushed hard and had a few runs, including a five-point spree. They finished off the set with a three-point streak that started with a kill by
Hannah Harrer.
The first half of the second set was more back-and-forth. The Golden Eagles again jumped to an early lead, this time only 4-2. The Broncos immediately packed on two points and tied it up. From the 4-4 tie, the scoreboard would read a tie at four other points through the set.
In that second set, after a 13-13 tie, the CPP squad pulled ahead and led for the remainder of the set. CPP strung together three points and jumped ahead 16-13. From there, a steady stream of points from the Broncos increased their lead until the final score on the set read 25-19. Heading into the set break, the CPP squad led the match two sets to none.
The third set saw new life breathed into the hometown Golden Eagles. They started off the set with an 8-1 run that left the Broncos mildly stunned. From there through the Green and Gold got their second wind and quickly pulled to just a few points back. CPP cut the Golden Eagles' lead to just a few points but LA didn't allow them to do much more damage.
CSULA found its groove in the third set and its offense came alive, barreling past the Broncos and winning the set 25-13.
What would be the fourth and final set began with a Golden Eagles' service error. The home team went on a 7-2 run following that first point. The two teams traded points for nearly the rest of the match, but a four-point run for the Broncos pulled them ahead at 15-14. The game would see seven more lead ties until a kill by
Deanna Blaine gave the Green and Gold point 25. At attack error by the Golden Eagles ended up giving the Broncos the set and match at 26-24.
Two members of the Broncos' squad tallied double-digit kills in the match. Both
Kristen Hamlin and
Deanna Blaine recorded 13 kills in the match followed by
Hannah Harrer with nine and
Nicoletta Stork with eight.
Hamlin was the Broncos' team leader in both the kills and hitting percentage category. She posted a career-high .550, earning kills on 13-of-20 hits. She was followed by Stork,
Alexa Hasen, and Harrer.
Blaine was the team leader in digs as well, posting a total of 15 in the match. Just behind her in the category was
Zoe Herrera who registered 12 of her own. Stork and
Alina Smith led the squad in the assists category with 21 and 18, respectively.
The Broncos will continue their season on Saturday as they host the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will take place in Kellogg Arena on CPP's campus.
