POMONA, Calif. – A stellar job by the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team lead them to a 1-0 home victory over the 25th ranked Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles on Sunday.
Strong defensive play for the Broncos blanked the nationally-ranked opposition and a number of beautiful plays boosted the Broncos' morale and goal count.
About the game, head coach
Yossi Raz said: "I think to host a quality team like Cal State L.A. on Sunday after the double overtime game we had on Friday against the Toros is obviously a challenge. I'm very happy that the boys were able to cope with the challenges and come away with the W on our home field."
The win improves the Green and Gold to an overall tally of 4-1-3, complete with a 1-1-2 showing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The loss, Cal State L.A.'s first of the 2015 season, provides them with a 5-1-1 record so far and a 3-1 mark in conference play.
In minute No. 47 of the game, the Golden Eagles were on the fortuitous side of a foul called inside the Broncos' penalty box. A beautiful diving save to his left by
Jason Trejos stopped the penalty attempt and left the Golden Eagles stunned.
Almost exactly 10 minutes later, the Green and Gold would make their mark on the game as a goal from
Patricio Yrizar put them up 1-0. Getting the assist on the goal was
Eshel Chardon as a pass from him left Yrizar with a 20-yard shot from the left side. The Queretaro, Mexico native placed his shot in the upper left corner earning his first goal in Bronco Green and Gold with the shot and giving CPP the rallying cry needed to keep the visitors scoreless.
In the game, the Broncos were outshot by the LA squad 13-5, and Trejos recorded himself five saves on the day. A few minutes after the Broncos' goal, the sophomore was forced to once again showcase his reflexes as back-to-back point blank shots from CSULA nearly made it to the back of the net.
The game marked Special Olympics Recognition Day as Cal Poly Pomona athletics was pleased to honor some local athletes, participants, and volunteers who helped to make the recent Special Olympics Games, held in Los Angeles, a success. Debi Anderson, the Female Athlete Representative on the S.O. Southern California Board of Directors and Fabiola Aceves, a silver medal winner for singles and doubles tennis spoke in the event.
CPP will return to action after an extended break, heading up to Cal State East Bay on Oct. 9 for a contest with the Pioneers. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. Currently, the Pioneers hold a 2-6 record with a 1-3 mark in conference play. They have two games in between now and their contest with the Broncos.
