Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Successful PK Boosts Broncos to 2-1 VIctory!

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer secured a 2-1 victory over the Cal State East Bay Pioneers on Friday night. The win improves the Green and Gold to an overall 5-1-3 mark on the season, complete with a 2-1-2 showing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

"To go on the road in the CCAA and get this result is a tough thing" said head coach Yossi Raz. "I saw the team show a lot of focus through the match and I am proud of our guys. I saw them grow a lot in today's match as individuals and as a team."

With the loss, the Pioneers are now 2-9 in the 2015 season, with a 1-6 mark in conference play.

The Broncos were first on the board in Hayward as a shot from Alexander Turkson made it past the hometown goalkeeper. The Cape Coast, Ghana native received a pass from the combo of Christian Gonzalez Diaz and Sergi Monso. The goal was his third of the season and the assists were Gonzalez Diaz' and Monso's third and fourth of the season, respectively.

After Turkson's goal in the 16th minute, the Pioneers were held scoreless through 25 minutes. However, a fortuitous foul for them in the Broncos' penalty box provided them with a PK opportunity. Michael Paiva was able to put one past the CPP keeper and even the game up at 1-1.

The second half of the game came and with just over 10 minutes to play in the game the Green and Gold received an advantageous penalty call in the box. Gonzalez Diaz, CPP's goal leader took the kick and the Mission Viejo native recorded his fifth goal of the season.

In the game, the Broncos outshot the Pioneers 12-9 and both teams' keepers earned two saves. CPP's goalie in the match was Jason Trejos.

The Green and Gold will continue play on Sunday as they head east from Hayward to challenge the Stanislaus State Warriors in Turlock.

Stan State tied the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Friday evening 2-2 through 110 minutes of play and as such now holds a 10-1-1 record on the season, complete with a 5-1-1 mark in the CCAA.

Game time on Sunday is set for 11:30 a.m. and will take place at Warrior Stadium.
