Penalty Kick Lifts CSULA Over the Broncos

POMONA, Calif. – A battle of two defensive giantesses ensued at Kellogg Field on Sunday as the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team was defeated by the Golden Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles.

The only goal on the day for either squad was off a penalty kick in the visiting Golden Eagles' favor. In the 14th minute, a foul on the hometown Broncos provided Veronika Steen an opportunity to score. Her shot was in the bottom left corner of the net and past the outstretched hands of a diving Rickie Ives.

With the loss, the Green and Gold now hold a 5-3 record thus far in 2015 and an even 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The win provided Cal State LA with their first victory of the season as they now stand with a 1-5-2 mark on the season with a 1-2-1 showing in conference play.

In the game, the Broncos did outshoot the Golden Eagles, registering 12 shots to CSULA's five, but each was to no avail as the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper posted a total of seven saves in the match. Ives, in goal for CPP, recorded a pair of saves on the day.

Seven different members of the Green and Gold squad posted shots in the contest, with Reanne Macon and Ariana Fleischman leading the way at three each, Hailey James following at two, and Melissa Martinez, Natalie Di Angelo, Rachel Killigrew, and Stephanie Rodriguez each shooting once.

The game marked Special Olympics Recognition Day as Cal Poly Pomona athletics was pleased to honor some local athletes, participants, and volunteers who helped to make the recent Special Olympics Games, held in Los Angeles, a success. Debi Anderson, the Female Athlete Representative on the S.O. Southern California Board of Directors and Fabiola Aceves, a silver medal winner for singles and doubles tennis spoke in the event.

The Broncos will return to action after a week break. They will play a non-conference game against the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 3 with a 12 p.m. start on the campus of CSUSB.  The Coyotes currently hold a 3-3-2 record, complete with a 2-0-1 mark in CCAA play. They will play the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Sunday at 7 p.m.
