Broncos Fall in Three to Dominguez Hills Toros

CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball lost their match on Tuesday as they fell to the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros 25-13, 25-17, and 25-22.

With the loss, the Broncos hold  an 8-6 record thus far in 2015 complete with a 4-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The hometown Toros earned this second win in conference play and now hold a 2-5 record and have four wins and 11 losses on the season.

In the first set, the Green and Gold earned the first point with a kill by Christen Williams. The Broncos points in the first set became sporadic after the scoreboard read 7-5 in favor of the Toros. The Broncos were only able to post eight more points in the set and fell 25-13.

The second set went to the Carson-based squad as well as they topped CPP 25-17.  Looking at the early half of the set, it looked to be anybody's game,  there were eight ties in the first 12 points for each team, but with the scoreboard reading 12-12, the Toros stepped on the gas and racked up a five-point spree. The Green and Gold were able to post a few more points in the set, but to no avail as CSUDH came out on top 25-17.

What would be the third and final set was the closest the CPP squad came to winning a set. They fell 25-22, but made the Toros work for the win.  Each time that CSUDH took a lead, the Green and Gold seemed to pull even.  With the score at 8-8, the Broncos tacked on four points for their first multi point lead since the first set.

Unfortunately for the visitors however, they were unable to hold onto the lead as the Toros came barreling back and tied the set at 13-13. Three more ties came before the end of the set, and the Toros finished off the three-set sweep with a Green and Gold service error.

The Broncos' kill leader in the set was Nicoletta Stork, who provided her teammates with 11 kills. Following Stork on the leaderboard was Deanna Blaine with eight and then Kristen Hamlin with five.

Stork posted a total of 13 sets in the match, leading second-place Alina Smith by three. Blaine led the Broncos' defense with 20 digs in the match.

The Broncos will return home to host the Cal State San Marcos Cougars for the Cougars first match at Kellogg Arena since joining the CCAA. The match will mark the Broncos' annual Pack the Arena game. It will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday.

CSUSM will head to Kellogg with a record of four wins and 11 losses thus far on the season. The tally also includes the Cougar's 1-6 mark in the CCAA.
