POMONA, Calif. – The No. 20 nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team made a big impression in their first game of 2015, netting a 5-0 win against Dominican. The victory marked the first head coaching win for CPP's
Vanessa Valentine.
Things got started early at Kellogg Field as
Tori Tappero put the Broncos on the board in just the second minute of the game. A nice cross from
Hailey James was all that she needed to send the ball by the Penguins' goalkeeper.
In her debut game in Green and Gold,
Natalie Di Angelo scored the Broncos' second goal of the afternoon. Just under three minutes after Tappero's goal, the Torrance native posted her first collegiate goal. Earning the assist on that goal was
Megan Kisslan.
To keep the rhythm in the first half,
Daisy Duran, one of last season's impact freshmEn, provided the Broncos with their third and final goal of the half. She sent the ball flying by a diving Penguins' keeper for her first of the season and sixth of her career. Tappero provided a beautiful pass on the goal to allow Duran to put in the shot.
At half, the Green and Gold saw a 3-0 lead in their favor. They had allowed just three shots in the half and zero goals as the stellar CPP defense shut down the visiting Dominican squad.
Midway through the second half, two more Broncos would add their names to the quickly growing list of scorers. In the game's 72nd minute,
Kaycee Uy would provide her first career goal in Green and Gold. A bundle of action right in front of the goal and a pass from
Stacey Atwater provided Uy with the opportunity she needed to send the ball into the net. The score with just under 20 minutes to play stood at 4-0 in CPP's favor.
One final goal would be scored for the Broncos as
Sydney Yates, a freshman forward from Vista, found the net for her first collegiate goal. She sent a shot just too high for the opposing goalie to stop and scored the Green and Gold's fifth of the game. Atwater provided another assist on the goal, making for two in the game for her.
CPP's next game will be on Saturday as they defend Kellogg Field yet again. The 11:30 a.m. start will be between the Broncos and the Academy of Art Urban Knights. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive free popsicles.
