Monso Bicycle Kick Gives Broncos Win #1!

POINT LOMA, Calif – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team has earned their first win of the season as a late goal by Sergi Monso gave them a 1-0 lead and, ultimately, the game.

CPP finished up their season opening two-game road trip with a day trip to Point Loma to play against the Sea Lions. It proved to be a well-matched game.

The two teams fought hard and the defenses held their own through nearly the entire game. In the first half, the Broncos outshot PLNU 3-1 and each team's goalkeeper provided one save.

With the game nearing the end of regulation, the Green and Gold offense continued pressing hard. The second half saw the Broncos double the number of shots of the hometown Point Loma squad.

It wasn't until a fortuitous bicycle kick for Monso gave the Broncos the lead with just over four minutes to play that the two teams were separated. With passes from both Kris Korich and Justyn Peeples, Monso was able to capitalize on a jumble in front of the goal and send it past the PLNU keeper.

The goal marks the second in as many games for the Barcelona, Spain native and gave the Green and Gold its first win of the 2015 season. CPP now owns a 1-0-1 record on the year.

Korich and Peeples earned their first assists on the season with the goal.

CPP will return home for its next matchup as they challenge PacWest rivals, the Cal Baptist Lancers. The game will take place on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Kellogg Field. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive schedule posters courtest of the Cal Poly Pomona Athletics Department.
