By Aaron Salazar POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team aims to build its win streak as they hit the road for two conference games this weekend.
CPP defeated the Chico State Wildcats on Saturday at Kellogg Arena. The win moved the Broncos to 5-10 on the year complete with a 3-5 showing in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
First up for the Green and Gold are the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Eagles Nest. The Golden Eagles enter the contest with six-straight losses. They own a conference record of 1-6 en route to a 3-10 season tally.
In the last meeting between the two teams, the Broncos secured a commanding 82-45 win in the CCAA opener on Dec. 2. The home win at Kellogg Arena marked CPP's third of the season.
The Broncos have a commanding series lead over the Golden Eagles as they have won 79 contests while limiting the CSULA squad to a mere nine victories.
After challenging LA, the Green and Gold will stay on the road to challenge the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros enter the contest in a two-way tie with Cal State East Bay for first place in the CCAA as their records both stand at 7-0 in the CCAA. The Toros are 9-6 overall.
When the two teams last met in Kellogg Arena, on Dec. 5, the Green and Gold fell 73-66.
Prior to hosting the Broncos at the Torodome on Saturday, the CSUDH team will defend their home court against the visiting Humboldt State Jacks on Friday. HSU has secured a season tally of 7-8 complete with an even 4-4 mark in conference play.
Offensively, the young Broncos are led by freshman
Jordyn Shane. Shane is averaging 12.7 points per game. Senior center
Mary Williams is leading the team in field goal percentage at .563.
Defensively, Shane and fellow freshman
Jackie Ricketson lead the team in steals averaging 1.3 a game. Shane is also leading the team in minutes per game at 29.3.
Priscilla Brooks has amassed the team-leading rebound total, collecting 131 for an average of 8.7 per contest.
After the completion of the road trip, CPP will return home for three games. They will challenge the Humboldt State Jacks on Jan. 23, the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Jan. 28 and the UC San Diego Tritons on Jan. 30. All three games are scheduled to tip off at 5:30. The Jan. 28 contest marks the annual "Pack the Stands" event for the program.
