POMONA, Calif. – With a three-game homestand on the way, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team returns home for a Saturday matchup against the Humboldt State Jacks. The contest will take place at Kellogg Arena and is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
The Broncos will host the Jacks after a tough weekend against SoCal opposition that resulted in a pair of losses. CPP's overall record on the season is 5-12 and the Green and Gold are 3-7 thus far in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
HSU will head south after a split in SoCal last weekend. They first fell to the Dominguez Hills Toros 75-61 at the Torodome in Carson and then topped the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles by a single basket the following day.
The contest between the two Green and Gold squads will be the first and only regular season meeting of the year. With Humboldt's recent (2005-06) addition to the CCAA, the all-time series between the teams is relatively young. An even matchup has taken place as each team has secured the win in nine of the 18 contests. CPP and the Jacks will each participate in just one contest this week.
The Broncos' young squad has had a lot of newcomers step into big roles. The team's offensive leader is freshman
Jordyn Shane, a native of Upland. The 5-foot-7 guard averages 12.9 points per game and has amassed 219 points thus far in her opening season of collegiate basketball. Behind Shane in the No. 2 and No. 3 spot in points and points per game are
Marshanique Hall and
Mary Williams, respectively.
Sophomore
Priscilla Brooks has been a force under the basket as she has pulled down a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game. The sophomore transfer has participated in all 17 games that the Green and Gold have played thus far. Along with her team-leading rebound performance, the Riverside native also is fourth on the team in points scored and points per game.
As a team, the Broncos have collected more field goals and pulled down more rebounds than the opposition. CPP has also recorded 115 steals and 41 blocks so far this season.
After the Broncos host the Jacks, they will turn their sights on next weekend as they host both the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes and the UC San Diego Tritons. The matchup against the CSUSB team will mark the Broncos' annual Pack the Stands Night and the
Zooperstars will perform at halftime.
