Kamansky Ties Record With Lucky Win #13

POMONA, Calif. – The No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball improved on the already stellar season they are having with a 59-48 win over the Warriors of Stanislaus State in Kellogg Arena. CPP has started the season 13-1, complete with a 6-1 showing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The win, besides just being lucky No. 13, also marks a special milestone for Broncos' head coach Greg Kamansky. In his 16th season at the helm of the Broncos, Kamansky has tied the program record for wins for a head coach. The record, set by Bob Stull after 24 seasons with CPP, is 329 wins. Based on win percentage, Kamansky already has the title of winningest coach in program history with a 329-125 record and .725 mark.

Thursday's contest saw Barry Bell lead the Green and Gold offense, posting 18 points and adding eight rebounds. Jordan Faison led CPP in the rebounding category with nine. Jeremy Dennis was second on the team in scoring with 12 points. Both Bell and Dennis collected three successful shots from beyond the arc.

As Coach Kamansky reached his milestone, Faison also moved into fifth on the all-time record books with a career total of 1,343 points. He sits just 40 points shy of the No. 4 spot set by David Sybesma.

CPP's nationally-leading defense limited the opposition to a mere 26% shooting from the field. Stan State sank only 13-of-50 shots taken from the floor. They also sank just 8-of-28 attempts from beyond the arc. The visitors to Kellogg Arena did excel in the free throws category though as they sank 14-of-16 shots.

The Broncos committed just nine turnovers in the contest and also scored 18 points from inside the paint. CPP's bench was present in the contest as they secured 17 points.

Despite the Warriors jumping to an early 11-3 lead, the Broncos calmed down and played their game and quickly came back to take the lead at 14-13. The teams traded points for the remainder of the first half and entered the break with a three point Warrior lead at 25-22.

As they entered the second half, the Broncos put together a seven-point run to take a 29-25 lead. After Quentin Taylor's layup that gave CPP the 26-25 lead, the Broncos never looked back. They led the Warriors throughout the remainder of the second half and secured the win.

With the play clock reading just 2:51 to play, the Green and Gold held its largest lead of the game with a 13-point advantage over the visitors.

CPP will return to action on Saturday as they host the Chico State Wildcats at Kellogg Arena at 7:30 p.m. Chico is heading to Pomona after an 86-68 win over the Humboldt State Jacks. Thus far this season, the Wildcats have amassed a 12-2 record with a 6-1 showing against in conference opponents. They, the Broncos, and the UC San Diego Tritons are locked in a three way tie for first place in the CCAA.
