Najera Lifts Broncos to 1-0 Road Win at LA

LOS ANGELES – With a first-half goal from Luis Najera Jr., the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team topped Cal State L.A. 1-0 in Los Angeles Friday night.

Najera has now scored in three-consecutive games, with two game-winning goals in that span. Two of the top three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams won on Friday so the Broncos are keeping pace in fourth place at 10-3-2 overall and 6-2-1 in league action.

Up next is an 11:30 a.m. road game on Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros are just one point behind CPP in the standings.

Najera's goal on Friday came at the 29:00 mark after a series of terrific passes by his teammates. Jose Garcia and Dante Medina connected before Najera received a chip over the Golden Eagles' defense and headed the ball inside the far post. So far this season, Garcia and Medina each have two assists.

The L.A. offense put pressure on the Broncos throughout the match and CPP goalkeeper Jason Trejos tallied a season-high six saves. The Golden Eagles finished with a slight 15-12 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Garcia totaled a team-high four shots for the Broncos while Najera ended up with three. The CPP backline put together a tremendous showing, especially late in the second half. L.A. didn't produce a shot through the final eight minutes of action.
