Volleyball Defeats Dominguez Friday, 3-2

POMONA, Calif. – With a tremendous team effort, Cal Poly Pomona volleyball defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-2 on Friday night at Kellogg Arena.

The Broncos fell behind 1-0 but rallied to take a 2-1 lead. Once the Toros evened the score at 2-2, the match moved to a fifth and deciding set. CPP cruised to a 15-9 result in the final frame, wrapping up its first conference win of the season.

In addition to Andrea Bosnic's career-high 19 kills, Alexandra Gresham contributed 18 of her own to help the Broncos' offense. Senior Alina Smith collected a career-best 50 assists while four Broncos finished with double-digit dig totals: Deanna Blaine (22), Bosnic (16), Samantha Figueroa (15) and Smith (14).

While Figueroa tallied 12 kills, Kristen Hamlin registered eight with a stellar hitting percentage of .438. CPP will look to carry the momentum in Saturday's 7 p.m. home match against Cal State L.A. It'll be the annual "Dig for a Cure" event in support of breast cancer awareness.

After Friday's result, CPP improved to 5-14 overall and 1-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Toros dropped to 7-13 overall and 4-8 through league play.

Late in the second set Friday, the Broncos put together a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 22-17. The frame finished with an impressive kill by Smith.

CPP trailed 14-10 in the third set but rallied for an 8-0 run that was capped off with another Bosnic kill. The Broncos closed out that frame with a 25-18 score, including the penultimate point from an ace by Bosnic.

The two teams entered a 23-23 in the fourth set as CPP needed just two points to close out the match. CSUDH called a timeout and then scored twice, forcing a fifth set. In the final frame, the Broncos jumped out to a 6-0 lead that began with two-consecutive kills from Gresham. CPP didn't allow the Toros to reach double digits in the set and a service error by the visitors finished the match.
