POMONA, Calif. – Despite 16 kills from
Andrea Bosnic and 34 assists by
Alina Smith, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-0 home loss on Saturday to Cal State LA.
The Broncos were outhit by the Golden Eagles in percentage, .235 to .134. CPP nearly topped CSULA in the second set, falling 25-23 and nearly pulling even in the set score. The Golden Eagles closed out the sweep with a 25-20 score in the third frame.
CPP once again put together a balanced defensive effort as
Deanna Blaine led the team in digs with 15 while
Samantha Figueroa and Bosnic added 12 digs apiece.
Leading the way for CSULA was Alma Serna, who collected 12 kills with an impressive hitting percentage of .370.
The Broncos and Golden Eagles traded the lead early on in the first set and CPP pulled back to within 19-16 after a double block from
Desi Martin and Figueroa. CSULA rallied for five-straight points though and finished the opening frame with a 25-17 result.
CPP managed to hold a lead through most of the second set and raised the advantage to 19-17 when
Alexandra Gresham and
Kristen Hamlin combined on a block. Once again though, the Golden Eagles finished the set on an 8-4 run to extend their set lead to 2-0.
Despite trailing 23-13 in the third frame, the Broncos didn't back down. They scored six-consecutive points as Hamlin tallied two blocks and a kill in that span. CSULA slowed down the CPP attack in the end, finishing with the 25-20 score in that final frame.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. home match against UC San Diego. The first 75 CPP students will receive a free mini USB phone charger courtesy of Parking and Transportation Services.
