Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Broncos Dealt 2-1 Defeat Saturday by UCSD

CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament

POMONA, Calif. - Despite a tough 2-1 home loss on Senior Day Sunday to UC San Diego, the nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team will start the postseason on Tuesday as the Broncos will host a first-round CCAA Tournament game against Cal State LA at 7 p.m.

CPP is one of six teams advancing into the conference postseason. Once the first round is completed at campus sites on Tuesday, the semifinal and final rounds of the event will take place at Stanislaus State in Turlock.

Prior to Sunday's game against the Tritons, the Broncos recognized the athletic and academic achievements of Adi AzranEshel ChardonLeonel EspinozaJesus Tamayo and Rubik Zazian. Through the last four years, CPP men's soccer has produced a record of 52-15-11 with a 4-1 mark in the NCAA Tournament.

Despite UCSD and the Broncos going scoreless through the first 74 minutes of action, the game became tremendously dramatic in the final 16 minutes. Luis Najera Jr. converted on a penalty kick at the 74:47 mark. The Tulare native has scored in six-consecutive games for CPP.

The Tritons didn't back down though and netted the equalizer in the 86th minute after Justice Duerksen attempted a penalty kick. His first shot was saved by CPP goalkeeper Jason Trejos but Duerksen got his own rebound and knocked it into the net.

UCSD collected the game winner at the 88:06 mark, less than two minutes before the contest would have moved into overtime. The hero for the visitors was Christian Cordell, who tallied the score off of a teammate's corner kick.

For the Broncos, Tuesday will mark the fourth all-time appearance in the CCAA Tournament. CPP is defending champions of the event, having won the 2015 tournament title at Kellogg Field.
