CPP Topped by Cal State LA in CCAA Tournament

POMONA, Calif. - Despite a second-half score from Sergi Monso, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team couldn't pull even with Cal State LA on Tuesday night and dropped a 2-1 result in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament.

The Broncos' record falls to 12-5-2 overall while the Golden Eagles advance to the semifinal round of the CCAA Tournament on Friday. CPP men's soccer will await the NCAA.com selection show that will air on Monday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific. The top six teams from the West Region will qualify for the NCAA Tournament and in last week's regional poll, the Broncos held the No. 3 spot.

In Tuesday's matchup at Kellogg Field, CSULA jumped on the scoreboard with a goal in the third minute of play. Hakon Laugsand's header was initially saved by CPP goalkeeper Jason Trejos but Jonathan Hinojosa was able to knock in the rebound chance to put the visitors up 1-0.

The 1-0 score remained intact through halftime but the Golden Eagles extended their lead at the 67:27 mark when Shahin Hemat dribbled into the box and sent a shot past Trejos.

Junior forward Sergi Monso put the Broncos on the board in the 71st minute with his 10th goal of the season. On the play, he received assists from Nadeer Ghantous and Kevin Martinez as Monso gathered the loose ball after a deflection from a header and then knocked it past the CSULA goalkeeper.

The Golden Eagles' defense managed to keep the Broncos to zero shots through the final 12 minutes to keep the 2-1 lead intact.

Tuesday marked the third meeting between the two teams this season and it's now even with one win apiece and a draw early in the season.
