POMONA, Calif. – In a hard-fought match on Sunday, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Cal State East Bay at Kellogg Field.
The Broncos outshot the Pioneers 19-11 but couldn't find the go-ahead goal. As a result, CPP's records settle at 9-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Atop the conference standings, the Broncos remain in a tie for first place with Cal State San Bernardino. CPP now has a 12-day break from competition and the team will return to action on Oct. 21 at third-place Cal State L.A.
Both of the goals on Sunday came in the first half. The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute, when Steffen Sauer sent a corner kick into the box and Brett Fuchs tallied the score for the visitors.
Just four minutes later, the Broncos netted the equalizer. With a loose ball in the box and
Luis Najera Jr. falling to the ground, he managed to still line a shot into the left bottom corner of the net to even the score at 1-1. The junior forward from Tulare has now scored in back-to-back games.
CPP goalkeeper
Jason Trejos delivered quite a few key saves on Sunday, including the most important one in the 98th minute. The Pioneers' Kalvin Conley got a close-range chance and his header seemed destined to cross the line, but Trejos managed to swat it away and keep the tie intact.
Through the 110 minutes of action, the Broncos earned nine corner kicks while CSUEB attempted six.
