Broncos Hold Off Gators Friday in 3-2 Victory

POMONA, Calif. – After taking a 2-0 lead Friday, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team held off San Francisco State to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory at Kellogg Arena.

With the match moving into the fifth and final set, the home squad earned a 15-7 result in the last frame while six Broncos tallied at least one kill in that span.

Through the five sets, Alexandra Gresham led the CPP offense with 18 kills and a .325 hitting percentage. Desi Martin totaled six blocks while Alina Smith registered 34 assists. Defensively, Samantha Figueroa starred with 33 digs.

The win improves CPP's marks to 8-17 overall and 4-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Gators fall to 1-24 overall and 0-17 through league play.

In the first set Friday, the Broncos used a 7-1 run through the middle portion that was capped off with a kill by Andrea Bosnic. For the final point of the frame, Kristen Hamlin knocked in a kill to give CPP a 25-20 result.

In similar fashion, the Broncos rattled off a 6-1 spurt in the middle of the second set as Karah Griffiths provided the final kill of that stretch. To close out the 25-21 result in that frame, Gresham tallied the last kill.

The two squads settled into a 23-23 tie in the third set but SFSU captured the next two points to extend the match into a fourth frame. The Broncos couldn't overcome a small deficit late in the fourth set and the contest progressed into the fifth. At that point though, it was CPP's time to shine and the home team cruised to a 15-7 result to conclude the 3-2 victory.

On Saturday, the Broncos will play their final match of the 2016 season with a 7 p.m. home contest against Sonoma State.
