Broncos Fall 1-0 to UCSD in West Title Game

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In an overtime battle for the NCAA Division II West Region title, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team lost 1-0 at UC San Diego on Friday night.

After advancing past Sonoma State and Simon Fraser in the first two rounds, the Broncos' memorable season ends with an overall record of 13-6-3.

Despite finishing with a 16-15 edge in shots, the CPP offense couldn't break through for a goal in La Jolla. After the two squads moved into overtime with a 0-0 score, the Tritons capitalized on an own goal in the 95th minute for the game winner.

Just past the 60-minute mark in the second half, the CPP offense generated two of its best chances of the evening. Junior Sergi Monso ripped a shot from just inside the box but the attempt was stopped by the Tritons' goalkeeper. Just 90 seconds later, Kevin Martinez ripped a free kick just to the right of the net.

Now in the two NCAA Tournament appearances during the four-year tenure of head coach Yossi Raz, the Broncos own a 5-2-1 mark. Overall, CPP has posted a 54-17-12 record through the four seasons under the Raz leadership.

Friday's West Region title match marked the final collegiate contest for the Broncos' five seniors: Rubik Zazian, Jesus Tamayo, Eshel Chardon, Leonel Espinoza and Adi Azran. The group has been instrumental in the success of the program through the past four years. CPP finished as the NCAA Division II National Runner Up in 2015 and now West Regional finalists in 2016.

Heading into 2017, the Broncos' double-digit point-getters - Monso and Luis Najera Jr. - will be returning as seniors. Monso tallied 12 goals and four assists while Najera added six goals and an assist.
