POMONA, Calif. – With a quick turnaround after a two-game trip to Canada, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will return to action Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. home tipoff against UC San Diego.
It marks the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener for both squads and also the 2016-17 home opener for the Broncos. CPP enters with a 2-4 record while UCSD holds a 4-2 mark. The Broncos will look to avenge last year's results as the Tritons won three times, including a 71-60 result in the first round of the CCAA Tournament.
Free throws and rebounding have proven to be two of CPP's biggest strengths so far in 2016-17. The Broncos are sinking 71.3 percent of their free throw attempts and outrebounding opponents by a margin of 9.1 boards per contest.
The top free throw shooter at the moment is junior
Chelsea Waddy-Blow, who has knocked down 21 of her 25 attempts for a 84-percent mark. Teammate
Priscilla Brooks leads CPP in rebounding with 8.2 boards per game while Waddy-Blow isn't far behind with a mark of 7.0.
Marshanique Hall has joined those two in contributing key points offensively. Hall is averaging 8.7 points per game, including 18 against Black Hills State and 17 against Simon Fraser.
The Tritons are receiving votes just outside the top 25 of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) rankings. UCSD carries a field goal percentage of 44.8 into Tuesday's contest.
After Tuesday's matchup, the Broncos will travel to play San Francisco State on Friday. Then CPP starts a three-game homestand on Dec. 10 with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Cal State San Marcos.
