POMONA, Calif. – With two-consecutive wins, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will look to build on that momentum this week with a pair of home matches to wrap up the regular season.
Last weekend in Northern California, the Broncos topped Cal State East Bay Friday and then defeated Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. Both matches ended in 3-1 results.
This week, CPP hosts San Francisco State on Friday and Sonoma State on Saturday. The first serve will be at 7 p.m. on both nights at Kellogg Arena.
Although Saturday would typically be Senior Night, the 2016 Broncos do not have any seniors on the roster. CPP's junior class includes five student-athletes:
Deanna Blaine,
Alexandria Bollier,
Samantha Figueroa,
Alexandra Gresham and
Alina Smith.
While Gresham put together an impressive performance last Friday with 21 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, it was the trio of sophomores that shined on Saturday.
Andrea Bosnic led the way with 15 kills while
Kristen Hamlin added 11 and
Desi Martin contributed 10.
Figueroa, a junior from South Pasadena, continues to lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in digs with an average of 5.2 per set. She's collected 20 or more digs in each of the last three matches.
Currently, the Broncos are 7-17 overall and 3-12 in league play. This week's opponents – the Gators and Seawolves – are on opposite ends of the standings. SFSU is 0-16 through CCAA action and Sonoma holds a 12-4 mark in the league.
