SAN FRANCISCO - With a tremendous team effort, Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball cruised to a 59-43 road win at San Francisco State on Friday.
The Broncos dominated the second half in particular, outscoring the Gators 32-18 in that span. CPP has taken an early lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), owning a 2-0 mark in league play while going 4-4 overall.
Junior forward
Chelsea Waddy-Blow led the offense on Friday, going 7-for-8 from the floor and totaling a season-high 20 points. As a team, the Broncos shot 48.8 percent on field goal attempts.
CPP also finished with a 42-31 rebounding edge, highlighted by a team-high 11 rebounds from
Priscilla Brooks. The Broncos limited San Francisco State to a 23.7-percent mark from the floor.
Alyssa Benton started the scoring with a three-pointer and just 90 seconds later,
Jackie Ricketson added a triple to extend CPP's lead to 8-2. The Gators rallied late in the first quarter, taking an 18-16 lead into the second frame.
That's when the Broncos started to take over, closing the second quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 27-25 edge into halftime. At the 3:27 mark in the third quarter,
Jordan Kimbrough dropped in a layup to push the CPP margin to 10 points.
Casey McWilliam sank a three-pointer for the Broncos' final basket of that quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter,
Marshanique Hall sank a pair of free throws to give CPP its largest lead of the contest at 58-41.
After the Broncos' 16-point win on Friday, CPP now turns its attention to a three-game homestand starting on Dec. 10 against Cal State San Marcos.
