CHICO, Calif. – Fueled by a dominating offensive performance in the third quarter, Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball defeated Chico State 66-49 on Friday in a game viewed worldwide on ESPN3.
A trio of Broncos led the visiting team's offense with
Alyssa Benton,
Mary Williams and
Priscilla Brooks scoring in double figures. The victory improves CPP to 4-0 in the last four meetings with Chico.
At 10-15 overall and 7-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Broncos continue to hold seventh place in the conference standings. With two regular season games remaining, CPP continues to battle for a spot in the CCAA Tournament.
Benton was named the ESPN3 Player of the Game, collecting a career-high 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Williams and Brooks both tallied double-double performances, including Williams with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Brooks registered 14 points and 16 boards. CPP outrebounded the Wildcats 45-28.
The first quarter went the Broncos' way in Acker Gymnasium. After the hometown Wildcats opened off scoring with a three-pointer, CPP answered back with a 9-2 run to lead the Chico squad 9-5. The home team pulled back a bit though and tied things up at 11-11. Entering the second quarter, the Broncos held a 13-11 lead.
The second quarter saw more of the same offense from both squads as the Green and Gold and the Wildcats traded points through the entirety of the quarter. At the halftime break, the score was all tied up at 21-21.
Starting the third quarter scoring for the two squads was
Erin Hagan, who got a jumper from just inside the three-point line to give the Broncos a 23-21 lead. The third quarter then saw the CPP offense take off. CPP put together a 7-0 run in the later stages of the quarter and that spurt was capped off by a Benton three-pointer from the left side. In the third quarter, CPP outscored the Wildcats 22-13.
The Broncos continued their momentum in the final quarter as they opened it off with three points to take a double-digit lead over the Chico team. After a six-point spree where Williams, Benton, and
Jordyn Shane each recorded a layup, the Green and Gold took their largest lead of the game to that point with a 15-point advantage.
The final minutes of the game for the CPP squad saw them maintain the double-digit lead in the contest and at one point stretch the margin to 18 points.
The Broncos will return to action on Saturday as they stay on the road and head to Turlock to challenge the Stanislaus State Warriors at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. The contest is set to begin at 5:30. On Friday, the Stan State team topped the Humboldt State Jacks 93-64 and will enter the game with an overall record of 15-8, complete with an 11-6 showing in CCAA play.
