Brooks Scores 19 but CPP Falls to Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. – After topping Chico on Friday, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team couldn't complete the weekend sweep and suffered a 76-65 road loss to Stanislaus State on Saturday.

The Broncos fall to 10-16 overall and 8-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Warriors improve to 16-8 overall and 12-6 in league play.

The Broncos continue to control their own destiny when it comes to qualifying for the CCAA Tournament. A win in the Homecoming game against Cal State San Marcos on Feb. 27 would guarantee CPP a spot in the conference playoffs that'll start March 1 at campus sites.

Sophomore forward Priscilla Brooks led the team in scoring Saturday, dropping in 19 for her highest total in a CCAA contest this year. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Senior center Mary Williams collected 13 points, marking the 10th-consecutive game she's tallied double figures. Freshman guard Jordyn Shane led the Broncos in assists with four, matching her season best. Shane, Erin Hagan and Marshanique Hall collected eight points apiece on Saturday.

To kick things off at Fitzpatrick Arena, the Warriors sank an early three to take a quick lead on the Broncos. CPP answered back with a Hagan layup. Another basket for the home team, and the Green and Gold opened up a six-point run, their largest of the quarter.

Shane opened and closed the run with layups. In between her baskets was a layup from Brooks. After the visitor's run, the Warriors tallied seven-straight of their own. Both squads would tally a few more points in the quarter and the two squads entered the end of the first quarter with the score at 19-12 in the Warriors' favor.

The Green and Gold bounced back in the second quarter as they added a seven-point run. That run cut the hometown lead to just three and the Broncos would continue to record points in the half, tallying points each time the Stanislaus squad did. At the halftime break, the score in Turlock was 34-29 in the home team's favor.

Coming out of the break, the home team carried their first half momentum and proceeded to go on an eight-point run. The Broncos cut the margin back to 11 points on a couple of occasions late in the contest but couldn't trim the lead back into single digits. A sizeable portion of the CPP offense came from free throws as the Broncos went 18-for-25 at the line on Saturday.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 with the Homecoming game against Cal State San Marcos. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena and the first 750 fans will receive a free Foam Fingers giveaway. To view the entire Homecoming schedule, go to cpp.edu/homecoming.
