Broncos Top Vanguard 6-3 in Monday Matchup

POMONA, Calif. – The No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team secured a 6-3 win on Monday evening against the visiting Vanguard Lions at Scolinos Field.

With the win, CPP improves to a season tally of 7-3. They will return to action on Wednesday as they host the Azusa Pacific Cougars at Scolinos Field. The contest is set to begin at 6 p.m.  The loss for the Lions was their fourth of the season as they now hold an 11-4 record thus far this season.

CPP's scoring kicked off in the bottom half of the first inning as Jared James took sole possession of first place on the Broncos' 2016 leaderboard with his third homerun of the season. The shot to left gave the home team a quick 1-0 lead. The Broncos recorded nine hits in the game.

Starting on the mound for the Broncos was Tyler Rowe. The junior transfer to CPP dealt for five innings and allowed just two runs on three hits while racking up four strikeouts. His performance through the game's opening innings secured him the win, his first of the season.

In the top half of the inning following James' homer, the Lions scored their first run of the contest. With a groundout to shortstop, the Vanguard runner was able to tie things up as he made his way home from third.

The third inning remained scoreless for both halves, as did the top half of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth the Broncos would jump into the lead as a wild pitch with Jason Padlo and James on base advanced the runners, thus allowing James to score the Green and Gold's second run. The very next batter, Nic Hernandez, singled through the right side and then advanced to second on the throw. His knock brought Padlo home from second.

Vanguard would add another run in the top of the fifth inning as an unfortunate Bronco error allowed a runner stealing third to score and pull the visitors just one back of the home team.

The Broncos recorded a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth as Bruno singled down the line to bring home Matt Reynoso. After walking in his at-bat, Reynoso stole back-to-back bases to land himself at third base.

In the bottom of the sixth inning with Jason Padlo and Michael Ern on base, Broncos' catcher Alex Kline singled through the right side to post two more runs on the home side of the scoreboard.

After a couple pitching changes for the Broncos, Matthew Grier, Erik Trask, and Zach Williams all entered the game to pitch. With a pair of inherited runners on base, a single to right off of Williams allowed the Lions' third run to cross the plate.

Completing the game on the mound for the Green and Gold and earning the save was Peter Beattie, as the newcomer to CPP would face just three batters with outs via groundout and a double play.
