POMONA, Calif. – In front of a screaming Homecoming crowd of 1,483, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team routed the visiting Cal State San Marcos Cougars 58-38 on Saturday at Kellogg Arena.
The victory for the Broncos, in addition to improving CPP's season record of 11-16, complete with a 9-11 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), also locked them in seventh place in the CCAA Tournament. In a first-round matchup, the Broncos will play the UC San Diego Tritons on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in RIMAC Arena in La Jolla.
Drawing the loss in Saturday's contest, the CSUSM Cougars finish their season with an overall record of 7-18 and a 5-15 mark in their first season in the CCAA.
Saturday marked Senior Night for the Broncos as well and what a night it was.
Mary Williams, the Green and Gold's lone senior, earned Player of the Game accolades as she led the team with a 9-for-14 performance from the field. She tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds in the contest marking yet another double-double.
Two other members of the CPP squad earned double-digit points in the contest as
Priscilla Brooks tallied 14 and
Jordyn Shane came in with 10. Brooks also ranked second on the team with nine rebounds.
The hometown Broncos sank 26-of-51 shots taken in the contest and posted a 51% shooting from the field as a team. The Green and Gold defense also limited the visitors to Kellogg Arena to just 13-of-52 shots and a 25% shooting.
From a distance, 4-of-8 shots taken by the Broncos found their mark adding 12 points to the board. CPP racked up 32 points inside the paint limited the opposing Cougars to just eight. The Bronco bench also outscored that of its opponent as they tallied 12 points to CSUSM's two.
The Broncos did a stellar job of capitalizing on all the in-game opportunities. In the fourth quarter, with 6:59 on the clock, the home team secured its largest lead of the game, a 22-point advantage. As the final deficit for the Cougars was 20 points, the Green and Gold maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
