ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – A second half offensive surge from the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team led to a 50-48 victory for the Broncos against the Sonoma State Seawolves.
The win improves the Broncos to an overall mark of 8-13 on the season complete with a 6-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With the loss in the contest, the hometown Seawolves fall to 3-11 in conference play en route to a season mark of 8-15.
Leading the way for the Green and Gold was senior
Mary Williams. She posted 10 points and eight rebounds. Just behind Williams with nine points of their own were both
Alyssa Benton and
Priscilla Brooks.
Every member of the CPP squad scored in the contest with point tallies ranging from two to 10.
As a team, the Broncos tallied a 31.9% shooting percentage from the field. The Green and Gold defense limited the hometown's offense to 32% shooting from the field as well, so shooting was even among the squads.
Sonoma did sink seven shots from the three point line as opposed to the Broncos' one, but CPP did excel from the free throw line, sinking 10 more shots than the Seawolves.
The Broncos shined in the rebounding category, winning that category 40-24.
The Seawolves did carry the lead through most of the game and in the second quarter they even led the Broncos by 16 points. The hometown offense racked up nine-straight points at the end of the first quarter of into the second, their largest run of the game.
After the halftime break, a new team seemed to emerge from the CPP locker room. Trailing 34-20, the CPP offense added 30 points in the second half while limiting the home team to merely 14 points.
The Green and Gold will return to action on Saturday as they stay in NorCal and challenge the San Francisco State Gators. On Friday, the Gators fell to the Humboldt State Jacks by just four points and will head into the game against the Broncos with a 3-11 record in conference play.
