Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos Split the Day, Now 3-1 on Season!

IRVINE, Calif.- Cal Poly Pomona's baseball team split the day on Saturday as they fell in game one against the Concordia Irvine Eagles and bounced back to top the home team in the final game of the series.

CPP now holds a season tally of 3-1 as they won the series against the Eagles, first topping them 9-8 on opening day, winning 3-0 on Friday, and then splitting the day on Saturday.

GAME ONE: CUI 4- CPP 3
A strong pitching matchup carried both the Broncos and hometown Eagles late into the game without allowing a single run.

CPP was able to record nine hits in the contest as the Green and Gold offense was very active. Starting on the bump for the Broncos in the contest was newcomer Tyler Rowe. Rowe, a junior transfer dealt 3.2 innings for CPP and allowed just three hits with no runs scored. He also racked up three strikeouts and allowed zero walks.

After Rowe's debut for the Broncos, CPP went through six more pitchers in the game. Pitching through the remaining 5 innings for the Green and Gold were Peter Beattie, Kohto Hasegawa, Erik Trask, Matthew Grier, Zach Williams, and Ryan Alsworth.

In the seventh inning, CPP struck first as Jared James singled up the middle to score Alex Kline. That run remained as the game's lone run until the ninth inning.

Inning nine came, and with it, Chris Stratton singled up the middle with Nicholas Bruno on base, allowing him enough time to score and add CPP's second run to the scoreboard. After Stratton's knock, James would add number three to the Broncos' side of the scoreboard as his single through the right side brought home Stratton.

To close out the game, a double down the left field line for the home team brought home a pair of their runners to bring them just one back of CPP. Then, with the score at 3-2, Concordia's designated hitter in the game launched a homer to score himself and one other to give them the walk-off win.

GAME 2: CPP 12- CUI 3

Michael Koval took the bump for CPP in the final game of the series and, thanks to big bats from his team and solid outings on the mound, secured the win.

Koval dealt for three innings and allowed four hits and three runs. After his showing, Beattie jumped on the mound and dealt for three scoreless innings. He allowed just four hits and drew five flyouts and two groundouts. The final pitcher for CPP was Grier who closed out the game in the seventh inning.

Offensively, the CPP bats were alive and well in the ballgame. The Broncos racked up 11 hits, including homeruns from both James and Ryan Webberley.

In the first inning, CPP's Caleb Romo lined out to center field to bring home Chris Stratton, who reached third after walks to himself and Webberley, and a subsequent double steal. In the bottom of the first inning, the Eagles tied it up with a single to left.

In the second inning, the Broncos added to their run tally as Stratton would earn his first RBI of the game with a single through the right side. Scoring on his knock was Nicholas Bruno. After the run scored, the bases were loaded and Jared James was hit by a pitch to score Cody Martin.

The next to bat was Webberley and he walked to score Jacob Bernardy. The final run of the inning cam at the hands of Romo who flew out to center but allowed enough time for Stratton to make his way home and make the score 5-1.

Inning number three saw CPP pad their lead as Bruno scored on a long flyout from Stratton making the Broncos' lead 7-1. James would then launch his first homer as a Bronco with a shot to right center that scored both himself and Bernardy. Without allowing the Eagles' defense time to breath, Webberley would back up James' homer with one of his own, his first of the season. The final run of the inning for CPP came with a double to center from Romo.

In the bottom of the third, the home team added a couple more runs of their own, their final two of the contest. At that time the score stood at 10-3 in the Broncos' favor.

One final strike from the Broncos would occur as Stratton tripled down the right field line and scored both Bernardy and Bruno. Those two runs were the last of the game and the final score was 12-3.

Stratton finished the game with four RBIs, James and Romo each posted three of their own, and Webberley added a pair to his game resume as well.

CPP will return to action on Friday as they host the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes at Scolinos Field. The contest will take place at 6 p.m. and will feature a ceremonial first pitch thrown by some of the former Broncos currently making their way up the ranks to the majors.
