@CPPMBB Wins 57-50 to Advance to 2nd Round

POMONA, Calif. – With a 57-50 win over the San Francisco State Gators Tuesday in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament, the No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team will go to Stockton.
 
The Broncos' victory advances them to the 2:35 p.m. second-round game on Friday against the UC San Diego Tritons. Topping the Gators Tuesday at Kellogg Arena improved the Green and Gold to a season tally of 22-6. During the regular season, which ended prior to the contest, the Broncos recorded a 14-6 record against conference opponents.
 
Drawing the loss the matchup, the Gators fall to a 16-11 record during the 2015-16 season.
 
Chris Sullivan was named the Player of the Game as he recorded a double-double, his first of the season on a 10 point, 11 rebound showing. He went 3-for-4 from the field and added four free throws to reach his point tally.
 
Jordan Faison led the field as he recorded 18 points in the contest on an 8-for-13 showing that was added with a couple of free throws. The senior also recorded five rebounds in the game and three blocks.
 
Jeremy Dennis and Barry were each on double-digit point watch as Dennis recorded nine in the game and Bell added eight. Freshman Jordan Ogundiran led the team with four assists in the game. He also added six points and a team-leading three steals.
 
In the contest, the CPP team outshot the opposition 21-19. The Broncos recorded a better shooting percentage as well as they sank 43.8% of shots taken and limited the Gators to 38%. SFSU did sink nine shots taken from beyond the arc, besting the Broncos' five, but CPP sank 10 free throws to SFSU's three.
 
The nationally-ranked defense of head coach Greg Kamansky also outrebounded the Gators 33-26. The Bronco bench sank five more points than the visitor's bench and CPP sank eight more points from inside the paint.
 
It was a stellar matchup at Kellogg Arena as the game opened with a Gator three. The two teams traded the lead seven times throughout the contest and neither team was able to put together more than a five point run until the Broncos' eight-pointer in the waning minutes of the first half.
 
The eight-pointer for CPP came from a pair of Dennis threes and a Faison layup that put the Green and Gold up 30-27. In the second half, the Broncos outshot the opposition and ended the game on a five-point streak that gave the game its final 57-50 score.
 
CPP will look to challenge the Tritons after they topped the Sonoma State Seawolves 71-65 in overtime. The contest will take place at the Stockton Arena and the game is set for 2:35 p.m. on Friday.
