Broncos Drop Series Opener to UCSD 6-3

POMONA, Calif. – In a battle of the nationally-ranked opponents, the No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team hosted the No. 23 UC San Diego Tritons at Scolinos Field on Saturday. The Tritons emerged from the contest, boasting a 6-3 win.

Starting on the mound for the Broncos was senior lefty Max Bethell. The Garden Grove native dealt for 6.1 innings in the contest, securing three strikeouts while allowing four earned runs on six hits. The loss in the contest goes to Bethell and drops him to a 2-3 record on the season.

Overall, the CPP squad holds a 15-7 record, complete with a 7-4 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), a record that leads the southern division. The visitors to Scolinos Field, the Tritons now hold an 8-5 conference record en route to a season tally of 18-7.

Daniel Pitts was the Broncos' standout offensively on the day, as a start in right field also saw him post three hits in four at bats. Chris Stratton and Ryan Webberley each posted a pair of hits in the contest as well.

Starting on the mound for the visitors but receiving a no decision in the game was Jack Rupe Jr. The Triton pitched 5 innings and allowed seven hits coupled with two earned runs.

In the first inning of the game, the visitors scored on a ground out to Nic Hernandez, CPP's first baseman. The Green and Gold answered back with a pair of runs of their own in the second inning as Pitts doubled down the left field line to score Webberley. After the tying run crossed, Cody Martin singled and then advanced on an error to score Pitts.

The fourth inning came with another run for the Broncos as Webberley posted one of his hits with a double to right center that scored Hernandez. After that third run was scored however, the home town run production halted.

The final five runs to cross in the game would all go to the Tritons. A double to left center and a groundout scored two in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. The seventh saw two more score with a pair of singles, and the eighth inning came with a triple to right center that scored the sixth and final run.

Action for the two squads will continue Sunday as the Tritons take over hosting duties with a double header at their home field. The first pitch is set to be at 2 p.m.
