LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No.24 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team was defeated by the UC San Diego Tritons in both games of Sunday's doubleheader.
CPP now holds an overall record of 15-9 complete with a 7-6 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The No. 23 Tritons improved their conference record to 10-5 en route to their season record of 20-7.
The series finale for the two squads will take place at Scolinos Field on Monday with a 6 p.m. start time. The pitching matchup for the final game will be Broncos' ace
Ryan Olson and John Erhardt, a righty sophomore for the Tritons.
GAME ONE: CPP 0 – UCSD 3 In the first game of the day, the Tritons scored in the first and never looked back, a bases loaded walk gave them their first run of the game.
Pitching first for the Broncos was
Peter Bayer. The senior went five innings and allowed just two hits and one run to score while striking out eight and walking just four.
After Bayer, the Broncos turned the ball over to
Peter Beattie,
Zach Williams, and
Matthew Grier. The loss for Bayer was his second of the season and he now holds a 1-2 record.
In the seventh inning, a single to right and a sacrifice fly to right scored two more Tritons and gave the game its final 3-0 score. Securing the win for the Tritons was Preston Mott and earning the save was Kyle Mora.
The Broncos secured seven hits in the contest and were led by
Chris Stratton who went 3-for-4.
Ryan Webberley added a pair of knocks himself, and
Jason Padlo and
Daniel Pitts tallied the final two hits.
GAME TWO: CPP 1 – UCSD 2 In the twinbill finale, the Broncos gave the ball to
Michael Koval. The junior had his second-straight stellar outing, and despite falling on a walk off hit in the seventh, Koval allowed just six hits and one earned run to score while racking up six strikeouts and allowing just a single walk.
The Broncos' offense was very much alive in the second game, just not quite so at the necessary times. Stratton, Padlo, Webberley,
Cody Martin, and
Jacob Bernardy each tallied two hits.
Nicholas Bruno and
Daniel Pitts each added a knock as well.
Jared James, though not reaching via hit, continued to extend his reached base safely streak to 24-straight games.
In the fourth inning, CPP scored first as a single up the middle from Bernardy scored Webberley who led off the inning with a single.
The sixth inning came with the Tritons' tying up the game as outfielder Jack Larsen doubled to left center to send home the Tritons' first run. After blanking CPP in the top of the seventh, the home town then secured the win with a walk off single to right center.
