TURLOCK, Calif. - With the series shortened to just two games, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos and the Stanislaus State Warriors split the Sunday doubleheader at the Warriors' home field in Turlock.
CPP now holds a 22-12 record on the season, complete with a 14-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Broncos continue to hold first place in the
South Division standings.
In the first contest, the CPP squad fell 10-1 after a four-run first inning gave the hometown Warriors a quick advantage. Starting for the Green and Gold in the game was
Michael Koval. The Broncos' righty ended up drawing the loss in the contest and now holds a 5-2 record on the season. Jordan Kron of the Warriors secured the win with a complete game five hit showing in which he allowed just one run.
The second game showed more active bats for the CPP squad as the team scored six runs and limited the Warriors to just three.
Max Bethell secured the win for the Broncos in the showdown. The CPP co-captain dealt on the bump for seven innings and allowed just two runs on four hits. He is now 5-3 on the season.
GAME ONE: Warriors 10 – Broncos 1
With the game starting 23 hours after its initial scheduled start, the Broncos and Warriors ended up starting the series opener at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The home team was quick to get a jump on the CPP defense as four hits in the first helped them to tally four runs and lead the Broncos. Total in his final five innings, Koval allowed just two hits and two runs to score.
After his time on the bump, the ball was turned over to
Ryan Alsworth who pitched for an inning and allowed a pair of hits and runs to score. Closing out the game for CPP was the duo of
Erik Trask and
Tyler Rowe.
In the second, CPP ruled out the Warriors' shutout as
Jacob Bernardy grounded out to shortstop, but his contact allowed
Daniel Pitts enough time to score. The final runs in the game for Stanislaus came in the seventh and eighth innings. A pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly scored four Warriors and gave them an 8-1 jump on CPP.
The two runs in the eighth came on another couple of doubles for the Warriors.
For the CPP squad,
Jason Padlo led the way offensively as he tallied two of the Green and Gold's five hits. Also tallying hits were
Caleb Romo, Pitts, and Bernardy.
GAME TWO: Broncos 6 – Warriors 3
In the series finale, the Broncos struck first. With
Jared James singling to lead off the game, he was moved over by a Bernardy double and then scored as Padlo grounded out to the second baseman.
The bottom of the first inning resulted in the home team tying up the score, the run came as a heads up Warrior runner stole home.
CPP posted a couple more runs in the third as Romo singled to left field to score Padlo and advance
Nic Hernandez. Pitts then hit a long sacrifice fly that scored Hernandez and gave the Broncos a two-run advantage.
In an attempt to tie the game, the Warriors scored in the fourth with a groundout to first. One run scored on the play and the Broncos were up one on the home team.
With his second long ball of the season,
Daniel Pitts scored both himself and Padlo in the fifth inning, giving CPP the 5-2 lead. The next few innings would remain scoreless in Turlock.
In the eighth,
Michael Zidek singled up the middle to score Pitts after he walked and stole second. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Warriors their third and final run of the game.
Looking Ahead
The Broncos will return to action at home as they host Chico State on Saturday, April 16 with a start time at 12 p.m. The Wildcats hold second place in the CCAA's North Division.
