LOS ANGELES – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos dropped the second game of the series to the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles on Friday with a final score of 6-4. After the contest, the series now stands tied at one win apiece.
CPP's record now stands at 25-14, complete with a 17-10 record in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Golden Eagles improve their overall record to 10-27, complete with a 9-17 mark in conference.
Starting out on the mound for the Broncos and tallying final numbers of five innings pitched, three hits, two earned runs, three walks, and nine strikeouts was
Peter Bayer. The senior from Colorado received a no decision in the contest. Earning the win was the hometown's starter Daniel Diaz who improved his record to 2-1 on the season.
In the first inning, the Green and Gold scored quick to put the Golden Eagles on the defensive.
Jared James reached on a fielding error by the first baseman to lead off the game. On the same play, as the ball reached the outfield, the right fielder bobbled it and lost possession, allowing James to reach third.
Jacob Bernardy then ground out to the shortstop, but in the process tallied an RBI as James scored.
The Broncos added another couple of runs in the following innings to take a three-run advantage over the hometown CSLA squad. In the fourth,
Caleb Romo singled through the right side to score Bernardy who had reached via double to left.
Inning five saw CPP lock in run No. 3 as James singled at the first baseman with a difficult hop sending the ball over his head. Scoring on the play was
Daniel Pitts.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Golden Eagles would tally their first two runs. A double to right center and a groundout to short allowed for a pair of hometown runners to score, bringing the score to 3-2.
The following inning, in the home half, a single to right, bases loaded walk, and groundout to first enabled a trio of runs to score for CSLA, giving them a two-run lead in the ballgame. Inning seven saw another runner from the home squad score to put the score at 6-3 in their favor.
In the top half of the eighth inning, with
Jason Padlo on third, Pitts doubled off the right center field fence to pull CPP just two back in the game.
After Bayer's departure from the game, the Green and Gold turned the ball over the
Matthew Grier who ended up recording the loss with runs three through five being credited to him.
The Broncos and Golden Eagles will return to action Saturday at Scolinos Field for the series-finale doubleheader. The first pitch of game one on the day is scheduled for 2 p.m.
