CPP Grabs Two Wins From CSULA in Twinbill

POMONA, Calif. – The nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team swept a doubleheader from Cal State L.A. on Saturday at Scolinos Field.

The wins improved the Broncos' first-place lead to three games in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division. CPP is 27-14 overall and 19-10 in league play.

CPP cruised to a 12-2 victory in the first game Saturday behind a 7.2-inning masterpiece by Max Bethell. He scattered six hits and struck out five.

In the second game, Michael Koval tossed 6.1 shutout innings as the Broncos edged the Golden Eagles 2-0.

GAME ONE: Broncos 12 - Golden Eagles 2

CPP scored early and often, jumping out to a 7-0 lead with three runs in the first and four in the second. Jason Padlo collected the first RBI of the contest, knocking a sacrifice fly to bring in Jared James. Caleb Romo and Nick Hernandez followed with back-to-back doubles. Continuing the string of hits, Daniel Pitts lined a single two-out single to produce the Broncos' third and final score of the opening inning.

The first two runners reached for CPP in the second inning and Jacob Bernardy delivered with a triple into the left-center gap. Padlo followed with an infield single to score a run and Hernandez tacked on a sac fly later in the inning, pushing the Broncos' lead to 7-0.

The big hits didn't stop there for CPP as Ryan Webberley contributed a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth and Bernardy doubled in two runs later in that frame. Webberley finished the game 4-for-5 while Bernardy and Romo added three hits apiece. In total, Bernardy finished with five RBI.

Bethell allowed four doubles but left plenty of CSULA runners stranded. He retired the Golden Eagles in the seventh inning before exiting in the eighth. Erik Trask and Ryan Alsworth provided relief and combined to record the last four outs of the game.

GAME TWO: Broncos 2 - Golden Eagles 0

Koval shined from the start of game two, recording outs in nine of the first 10 plate appearances for the Golden Eagles. The CPP offense gave him just enough run support, manufacturing the game's first run in the second inning with a sacrifice fly from Webberley that brought in Romo.

The Broncos added another score in the bottom of the fourth when Michael Zidek reached on a fielder's choice as Romo raced home again.

The Golden Eagles managed to collect two-straight singles with one out in the top of the seventh and that brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate. Alsworth entered and promptly got a strikeout before a flyout to left ended the game with the Broncos victorious 2-0.

It marked the fifth save of the season for Alsworth, who leads the CCAA in that category.
