SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – A real pitchers' battle turned in the Broncos' favor as they topped the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes 2-0 in the series opener at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.
The win improves the Broncos to an overall season tally of 28-14, complete with a 20-10 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. With the loss in the contest, the hometown Coyotes sit with a 20-22 record on the season and an even 15-15 mark against conference opponents.
Starting on the mound for the Broncos and receiving no decision for his performance was
Tyler Rowe. The righty threw for five innings, allowing just three hits and tallying four strikeouts.
Taking over for him on the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning was
Peter Beattie who allowed a pair of hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
After Beattie's time on the bump,
Wyatt Shackleford climbed the hill in the bottom of the seventh with the game still locked in a 0-0 tie.
With two outs and a runner at second in the bottom of the ninth, CPP turned the ball over to sophomore righty
Ryan Alsworth. After recording the final out via strikeout, fans at Fiscalini were in for free baseball.
To lead off the top of the tenth,
Chris Stratton singled to left field.
Jared James and
Jacob Bernardy then had subsequent bunts to load the bases and bring up
Jason Padlo. Padlo hit a long fly ball to right field that secured him a sacrifice fly and the Broncos' first run of the game.
Later in the inning, with one out,
Michael Erb then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score James from third. Heading to the bottom of the tenth, the score was 2-0 CPP. Alsworth, the pitcher of record as the Green and Gold took the lead, secured the win in the game. The victory was Alsworth's fourth of the season.
The two squads will return to action on Friday as the Broncos return to Fiscalini Field for a 3 p.m. matchup with the CSUSB team.
